As we ripen into August…
This is a general collective reading of the energy of August. Below is my own interpretation of the cards that appeared before me.
As always take what resonates, and weed the rest!
We just came off a full moon in Aquarius, July 29, and I don’t think that’s incidental to any of this. It landed right as the lunar nodes finished their drag into the Aquarius–Leo axis for the first time in almost two decades. We’re transitioning modalities, from mutable to fixed. Old questions about belonging versus authenticity, expeditiously up for review, and two hours before the moon peaked, Jupiter sat in exact union with the Sun. Traditionally the most lucky, abundant day of the year, a Cazimi, it’s called. In the heart of the sun. Did I mention mercury just finished it’s second retrograde of the year in Cancer, sign of nurturing and boundaries? It’s been a lot of re-assessing the texture we call home, the people we call ours, and the memories we want to protect versus heal.
Saturn, meanwhile, stationed retrograde in Aries on July 26 and won’t turn back around until December 10, a good four and a half months of review, in the sign of the spark, the first move, the thing you do before you’ve thought it through. One planet just revitalized, and another just started asking pointed questions about where your fire actually comes from.

We’ve been here already, The Eight of Swords reversed, a woman with the blindfold coming off, hands finally free, only to discover the swords around her were never rooted. She’d arranged them herself sometime back when believing she was trapped felt safer than admitting she had a choice.
The Seven of Cups, sitting right where we are now, cups stacked up in cloud, each one dressed as a different kind of future. A crown. A snake. A laurel wreath. A shrouded face nobody wants to look at directly. Sallie Nichols would call this the psyche drunk on its own possibility, and Jung would tell you the shadow is sneakiest exactly here, in the abundance of choice, because it knows you’re tired of vetting every option and it’s counting on you grabbing the noisiest one out of sheer burnout. The cup worth reaching for is usually the understated one. It’s there with a bit of tension, a bit of allure, and it stays there whether or not you’re performing your choice.
Looking ahead, Justice, unhurried, scales level, sword straight up, not interested in your feelings about feelings around fairness, because numbers are fact. What you tended with integrity this year is going to come back with integrity. What you fudged or dodged or asked someone else to handle for you, that’s coming back too, itemized, in August, because the debt was always going to come due and this is simply the month the bill arrives. Divine law doesn’t punish. It refuses to lie.
Paired with the Empress, star-crowned, seated, unhurried, pregnant with an idea that’s finally ready to leave the body it grew in. Clarissa Pinkola Estés would know her immediately. Not the 1950s greeting-card mother. La Loba, the bone woman, out in the desert singing scattered pieces back into a living shape.
The Empress upright and mature is what it looks like when the inner mother stops apologizing for wanting things, when pleasure stops being something you have to earn first and becomes, instead, evidence that your nervous system finally trusts the world enough to let something in.
Underneath all of it, actually underneath, in the shadow position, easy to skip past on your way to the prettier cards bathed in light, sit the King of Wands and the Two of Wands.

The King of Wands is discipline that hasn’t gone cold. Fire that’s learned to be useful, controlled in the way an artist uses brush to imitate wind. The Two of Wands is the man on the parapet, globe in hand, deciding where in the world he’s actually going to plant the second unhinged staff, a decision made from height, from having climbed up to where he can see the whole board.
Requesting transmutation, our shadow asks, Is our inner masculine’s power drawn from a clean source, or is it still running on old adrenaline, ambition that’s really just fear wearing a crown? A leader who hasn’t done that work mistakes urgency for vision.
Decisions are going to get made in August. Some of you will make them from the throne. Some of you will make them from the version of yourself that’s seven years old and still hasn’t been fed. Because July really, and I mean REALLY, set the stage for us all to wipe the slate clean, to do the growing up the way that a summer begs.
Overarching theme is encompasses by Temperance. The angel with one foot on land and one in water, pouring between two cups without spilling. It may look like caution, but it is precision from having done the work underneath it: Justice’s math, the Empress’s blooming, the King’s fire finally directed. People throw around the phrase “divine timing” like a double-tied Hefty on trash day, but here it means something specific. It means walking where ease takes you, because the point was always alignment, and when something isn’t then, well, I think you know the feeling.

Numerology of the month: 27
Keywords: the scepter, reward of karmic merit, inner reflection, cycle completion, spiritual alignment, light in darkness, divine light, humanitarian service, universal love, cooperation.
This month’s number is 27. What were you supposed to do last July that you didn’t and how did that affect August of last year?
In Chaldean numerology, 27 is one of the more auspicious compound numbers, often called “the Scepter,” and it isn’t discarded down to its root 9; the Chaldeans read the compound itself as a layer of meaning. It’s ruled by Mars but tempered by the 9’s humanitarian pull, so the distinction isn’t raw aggression, it’s authority that’s been earned through original thought and disciplined effort rather than handed over by luck. The tablets describe it as a promise that reward follows the productive intellect, that ideas carefully sown will actually reap a harvest, so long as the person carrying the number acts on their plans instead of sitting on them. The one caveat the old texts attach is that it is a number of great promise that can also see everything taken away if the future isn’t provided for carefully, so the command it grants comes with an expectation of stewardship, not just fiery and ambition.

In the I-Ching, Hexagram 27, Yi, Nourishing Vision, asks us, what are you feeding, and what is feeding you?
Yi shows us a need to reflect on the type of inner Vision we are Nourishing. Big changes are on the horizon. Beginnings are so numerous now that it’s tempting to swallow all of them at once, indiscriminately, the way you’d eat standing over the sink because sitting down to a real meal felt like too much commitment.
Chew slowly enough to notice what you’re actually putting in your mouth. Pay attention to not only HOW you nourish yourself, but with WHAT shape of sustenance.

In a world that moves quickly, choosing to pause, to reflect, to go internally, is no small thing. Whether you read every word slowly or skim what calls to you, I’m grateful you are here.
A Few Questions to Sit With
For those beholden of pen, the journalers…some questions to help guide you into the month.
- Where did I mistake my own blindfold for something someone else did to me? What did I gain from believing I was trapped?
- Of everything in front of me right now, which choice is loud, and which one is patiently true?
- Where have I confused pleasure with indulgence, or mistaken restraint for self-punishment?
- Is my inner masculine leading from discipline, or from an old fear that’s finally learned how to wear a crown?
- What decision have I been circling that I already know the shape of? What’s actually stopping me from saying it out loud?
- What am I actively cultivating right now, whether I meant to or not? Does it match what I say I want?
- What have I outgrown but keep tending anyway, out of loyalty to who I used to be?
- If I trusted, completely, for even one day, that the help on the other side of this is real, what would I stop white-knuckling today?
“See” you next month!
